Background: Basketball is a fast-paced, high-pressure sport that requires not only physical talent but also strong psychological attributes. Each playing position—guard, forward, and center—demands unique mental skills that influence performance, decision-making, and team coordination.
Objective: This thematic paper explores the key psychological traits associated with different playing roles in university-level basketball, focusing on attributes such as self-confidence, motivation, anxiety control, focus, and mental toughness.
Significance: Understanding the mental demands of each position helps coaches, trainers, and sports psychologists tailor psychological training programs to suit individual roles. This approach enhances player development, team dynamics, and overall performance.
Results: Thematic analysis reveals that guards often demonstrate quick thinking and emotional control, forwards exhibit adaptability and leadership, while centers tend to show resilience, composure, and assertiveness in high-contact situations.
Conclusion: Positional responsibilities in basketball shape distinct psychological profiles. Integrating mental skills training based on these role-specific demands can significantly improve athlete preparedness, performance consistency, and team success at the university level.
